Sustainable aviation fuel

Have you heard of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), the key player for elevating aviation’s decarbonisation efforts? Join the community that ramps up the use of SAF and accelerates aviation’s decarbonisation initiatives!

Aviation fuel suppliers in the EU will ensure that aviation fuel contains the minimum shares of SAF 2% SAF from 2025, with a gradual increase to 70% SAF by 2050.

There are many types of SAF recognised by the EU, CORSIA and the aviation community. airBaltic aligns with the definition of SAF in the ReFuelEU (2023/2405) regulation and RED II (2018/2001) directive, which defines SAF as:

  • Renewable fuels of non-biological origin (other than biomass) with at least 70% greenhouse gas savings (hereinafter referred to as synthetic aviation fuels).
  • Aviation biofuels produced from non-food feedstock such as used cooking oil, animal fats, algae, manure, straw, the biomass fraction of municipal waste, etc.
  • Recycled carbon aviation fuels produced from waste materials unsuitable for material recovery or from waste processing gas with at least 70% greenhouse gas savings.
